Clifton Hearton Collins, Sr. On January 28, 1925, in Dime Box, Texas; Clifton was born to the late General and Annie Collins, two sons, Rodney Collins and Clifton H. Collins, Jr. Dr. William Collins, Blanch Collins, Travis Collins, Millie Andrews Horace Collins, Gertrude Floyd, Mammie Moore, Elebert Collins, Rachel Coleman, all preceded him in death. Clifton is survived by his wife, Virginia R. Collins, one brother, General Collins Jr. of Dime Box, Texas, and one sister, Ruby Roberson, of Houston, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lois McDonald, of Athens, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Clifton attended grade school in Lee County and graduated from Fairview High School in Dime Box, Texas. Clifton joined church at a very early age in Dime Box, Texas where he accepted Christ as his savior. At age 18 Clifton was inducted into the armed services of the United States. During this time, Clifton completed Ground Force Advanced Ordinance Ammunition Training School in Savanna, Illinois, 1944. Completed Ground Force Ordinance Ammunition Training School in Savanna, Illinois 1944 Clifton also served his country in Frankfort, Germany, and Marce, France. As a result of his honest and faithful service to his country, he received an honorable discharge from the army of the United States of America, at Camp Fannin, Texas on February 6, 1946. Clifton was a graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, August, 1952. Completed the 236th school in agency management, Rye Beach New Hampshire, 1968. Further study: Management Psychology, University of Houston, 1969. Completed Advanced Sales Training Course-Group Insurance, Houston, Texas October 1961; completed L.U.T.C. training Houston, Texas 1968; Staff Managers Course, Houston Texas July 1961. Intermediate Sales Training Course, June 1961. Professional certificates: Texas Education Agency, Driver's Education - Life; Elementary School - Life; Secondary School - Life, 1952. Awards and Citations: President of the United States Award presented by president Gerald R. Ford in 1976 for valuable service to this nation and the Selective Service System in the administration if the Military Selective Service Act of 1967. The president of the United States of America Award was presented to Clifton by Richard M. Nixon in 1973 for five years of outstanding service to this nation as an uncompensated member of the Selective Service System. The president of the United States of America Award was presented to Clifton by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 for appointment as a board member to local board No. 291 Texas. Clifton received the Outstanding Achievement award of the Shell and Bation sales campaign, 1974, he was recipient of the Founders' Month Achievement Award, 1974, Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. Clifton received the Leadership and Excellence Award in sales performance 1982. Clifton received 25 certificates of merit for outstanding performance from Golden State Mutual Life Insurance. Clifton was honored a the 1983 Round Tables Conference, Bank of America in San Francisco, and Los Angeles California for accomplishing the status of "Staff Manager of the Year",Clifton served as agent and Staff Manager 30 plus years for Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Co. from 1953- 1990. Golden State honored him with a Retirement Celebration at Texas Southern University, February 11, 1990, where he received numerous plagues and citations. Served as a member of the Selective Service Draft Board under President Lyndon B. Johnson, President Gerald Ford, and president Nixon. Member Willowbend Civic Club; Member Precinct 287 Civic Association; served as Treasurer for two terms; member of the Boy Scouts of America. Collins emerged as a candidate for trustee, Klein Independent School District, 1961. Collins served as guest speaker for local school district and churches especially during career awareness. Held office of trustee, Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church 1954 to 1967; member Prairie View A&M University Alumni Association, Clifton held membership in the Life Underwriters Association, held membership in the YMCA. Clifton became an entrepreneur in 1990. He established and managed Collins Insurance Agency as a successful business man until 2001. Visitation will be held at Bellaire United Methodist church, 4417 Bellaire Boulevard form 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Friday, February 5, 2005 in the Chapel. 713-666-2167 Rick Hume, Senior Pastor. The services will be held at Bellaire Untied Methodist church on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 11:00 A.M., In the Sanctuary. There will be a visitation hour from 10:00 AM to 10:55 AM. The interment will be at the Houston Memorial Gardens 16000 Cullen Boulevard Houston, Texas 77233.
