Bernice Poteat "Bernie" Coley, born on July 15, 1928, of Roanoke, and formerly of Fieldale, Va., ascended to his Heavenly Father on Friday September 7, 2012. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Leander A. Coley and Nannie May Long; and two beloved brothers, Carl A. Coley and Francis H. Coley.
Left to cherish his memory are two sisters, Lucille C. Pickup, of Pinehurst, N.C., and Corrine C. Turner, of Miami, Fla.; his loving wife of 61 years, Virginia Wingfield "Boots" Coley; his three daughters, Cindy C. Davidson, of Roanoke, Va., Laurie C. Lynch (Andy), also of Roanoke, Va., and Jill M.C. Harbison, of Blue Ridge, Va.; one son, Brian L. Coley, of Roanoke, Va.; and grandchildren, Lark Miller (Don), Chase Davidson (Ally), Leah Harbison, Luke Harbison, Schuyler and Ian Lynch.
Bernie attended VPI before serving his country in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He retired from Appalachian Power Company as a Communications Supervisor in 1990 with 40 years of service. He was a Charter Member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club.
Bernie was an active member and held many offices in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Among his many talents were his beautiful singing voice shared during his years with the Appalachian and Roanoke Valley Choruses and the LDS Choir. Bernie spent many hours, and enjoyed researching and cataloging genealogy for both the LDS Library and the Wingfield Society.
Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Cotton Hill) at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2012. Bishop Bennette McGraw will officiate. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2012. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke.
