Mrs. Flora M. Coleman of 81 Union Street, Calais, Maine, applied for a military headstone for Private First Class Daniel Coleman who had served in Co. D. 35th Machine Battalion in the 12th Division in WWI. He had enlisted on July 24, 1918 and received an honorable discharge on Janauary 21, 1919.
Reenlised February 23, 1921 and honorably discharged May 15, 1922. Private Field Artillary Technical School detachment, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Daniel had died on March 9, 1936.
In the 1930 U.S. Census, widow Flora Coleman, 55, born Maine, parents born Scotland, was living in Calais, Maine, with sons Daniel, 33; George H., 23; and Charles A., 22, all born in Maine, father born Germany, mother born Scotland (sic).
World War I Registration Card Daniel Coleman, 21, living at 44 Gregory Street, Marbelhead, Mass.; born Feb. 28, 1897 in Calais, Maine; father born Germany; (Daniel was) employed by the Burgen Company in Marblehead; Florence M. Coleman who lived on 19 Barker Street in Calais, Maine, was his nearest relative.
The registrar reported that Daniel was tall, medium build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.
In the 1910 U.S. Census, George Coleman, 41, born Germany, parents born Germany, was living in Ward 5 of Calais, Maine, with Flora, 35, born Maine, parents born Canada; William L., 15; Daniel, 13; Caroline, 11; George H., 4; and Charles A., 3, all born in Maine; William J. Chambers, 42, born Maine, father born Maine, mother born Penn.; and Mary E. Chambers, 29, born Maine, parents born Canada.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, day laborer George L. Coleman, 31, born July 1869 in Germany, parents born Germany, was living on Main Street in Calais, Maine, with Maud, 25, born May 1875 in Maine, parents born Canada; William L., 6, born June 1894 in Maine; Daniel, 3, born February 1897 in Maine; and Caroline, 1, born April 1899 in Maine; brother-in-law and day laborer James Mckenzie, 21, born February 1879 in Maine, parents born Canada; and James' wife Annie, 19, born February 1881 in Maine, parents born Maine. The Mckenzies had been married for two years.
The couple had been married for six years and he had come to the U.S. in 1890.
Their three children were still living.
