Spent his boyhood days between New York City and Orange County. Began the study of law in the office of Sharpe & Winfield in Goshen, completed his course of study at the Albany Law School and was admitted to the Bar in May 1863; was elected Justice of the Peace in 1864 and served eight years; was elected Surrogate of Orange County in 1883 and served twelve years; was a village Trustee for four years; Trustee of the Farmers' Hall Academy, of the Slate Hill Cemetery Association, of the Orange County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of Washington's Headquarters at Newburgh NY and President of the Newburgh NY Historical Society.
He was a member of the American Rifle team which went to Ireland and England in 1875 and was appointed Inspector of Rifle Practice, with the rank of Captain in 1875 by Governor Tilden.

He was approximately six feet tall, 185 pounds with grey eyes and a fair complexion.
