Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara Peterson Cole, 69, passed away peacefully Monday, May 31, 2004. We will miss her dearly. Barbara was born January 11, 1935, in Wells, Nevada to Brent Peterson and Edith Palmer Peterson. She married her high school sweetheart, Merle E. Cole, on October 12, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple. Barbara used her many talents to bless the lives of her family and friends. As a wife and mother she perfected countless homemaking skills and later taught them when she worked for Utah State Extension. She was famous for her homemade bread, pickles and potato salad. She enjoyed painting and many people now enjoy her artwork in their homes. She went back to college and received her degree at age 56. Barbara loved to serve others. She would often be found visiting with someone who was sick or lonely. She joined in community causes and created the county exhibit for the state fair. Barbara served as co-chairman of The Old Folks Sociable twice, including its 100th anniversary. Her lifetime of service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints included both teaching and presiding in stake and ward Primary, Mutual, and Relief Society organizations. She was also an extraordinary Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed serving in the temple. A highlight of her life was when she recently served an LDS mission with her husband to the St. George Temple Visitor Center and Historic Sites Mission 2003 – 2004. Although her strength, wit and tenacity are legendary she would most want to be remembered for her undaunted testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ and for her love of family. Her favorite scripture was Alma 37:6, which says, "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass". Years of countless good "small and simple things" have added up to a fulfilled life – which is a great thing. Barbara is survived by her husband, Merle, three sons and two daughters, Ed (Cindy), Dave (Maria), Jody, John Cole, and Gemmie (Chad) Benson; 16 grandchildren and one great- grand-son. She is also survived by her father, Brent, and brother, Doug (Mary) Peterson. She was preceded in death by her mother, Edith, and sister, Pauline (Ben) Lambert. The family expresses deep appreciation to family, friends, and the staff of The University of Utah Medical Center and Harmony Home Hospice for the loving care they gave Barbara during the last few weeks. Funeral services will be held Sat., June 5, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the Grantsville Stake Center. Friends and family may call Friday, June 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the Tate Mortuary, 110 South Main, Tooele. The family will also greet friends briefly prior to the services on Sat., June 5th from 11:30-12:30 p.m. at the Grantsville Stake Center. Interment will be in the Grantsville City Cemetery.
