Dorothy Burton In grace she walked throughout her life with God, her everyday champion and protector. Dorothy Burton, 89 years young, moved on to full-time forever volunteer service to the Lord on January 14, 2009. Families and friends mourn her passing but celebrate her love of life, dedication to service, and courage to meet life's challenges with true grit, determination, and hard work. With a kind word and smile for everyone, she moved through every day with an innocent trust and belief that God would keep her under His care and counted on a legion of "Guardian Angels" as her back-up crew. Burton worked for 25 years for Barbasol in Indianapolis and worked at Riley Hospital for 17 years in the hospital's laundry and then, upon retirement, decided to take up the calling to serve Riley as a volunteer for the next 25. Her 25 years of dedicated volunteer service put her in the elite ranks of the top 17 volunteers in the entire Clarian Health system with over 7,900 hours of service to her credit. Her association with Riley Hospital, indeed, was lifelong. At age 5, Dorothy was admitted as a patient into Riley Hospital in 1924, the first year that Riley Hospital opened its doors to care for children. Burton was recognized with the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Indianapolis Business Journal in 2007 for her extraordinary effort over a long period of time to make a difference in the lives of children and families. Burton was the last one remaining of her family of 14 brothers and sisters, including Ethel Lois Cole Anderson also buried in Floral Park Cemetery. She was the daughter of Charles W. and Flora Cole, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harlan Burton. She is survived by her nieces, Kathy Edgerly, Lois Skiles, and their families, and great nieces and nephews.
