Elaine B. Snider's love touched many children at church.
By SUSAN BERO
VALPARAISO - For many years, Elaine B. Snider's motherly love was a comfort to members of the First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. David Byrum said Mrs. Snider opened her heart to each of the young wards left in her charge at the Valparaiso church's child care center. "Elaine was all about welcoming children," He said, "Children would come to church and not want to be left in the nursery, so Elaine would just hold them on her lap, week after week until they felt comfortable."
"When I think about Elaine Snider, I think about love," the pastor said. Mrs. Snider, 62 of Valparaiso, died Sept. 28 at the Porter County Hospice. "My mom appreciated everything and enjoyed the simple things in life," said Jody Snider.
She liked taking drives to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Watching the deer, small wildlife and even the birds in their natural habitat gave her pleasure, he said.
While battling myriad health problems, his mother found solace in her faith and enjoyed singing religious hymns.
She cherished time spent with her family and the outings shared with her grandchildren.
"I'll never have a better friend. She was pretty special," her son said. Mrs. Snider was a member of First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso and for many years was employed in the church nursery. She is survived by five sons, Jim (Chris) Lewis of Ottumwa, Iowa, Rick (Sue) Lewis of Daleville, Ala., Michael "Mickey" (Debe) Lewis, Jody Snider and Stephen Snider of Valparaiso; three daughters, Ronda (Jim) Leib, Debra (Brad) Thompson and Stephanie Snider all of Valparaiso; seven grandchildren; three brothers and four sisters.
Services were Oct. 1 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Byrum officiating. Arrangements were handled by the Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso.
Interment took place at Kimball Cemetery, Valparaiso.
