GALENA, Ill. — Eugenia “Jean” Clay, 96, who resided with her niece, Linda Diedrick, in Galena, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Midwest Medical Center, Galena. Services in celebration of her life will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport, where her family will greet friends 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, or to the charity of your choice.

Jean was born in 1918, in Cedar Rapids, to Martin and Ingerborg Colbert. She spent most of her adult life in Davenport. After graduating from Davenport Central High School in 1936, she was employed in the claim department of Bituminous Casualty Company in Rock Island until 1943. She married Harrison Clay Nov. 6, 1943, in Blytheville, Ark. While he was serving in the military, Jean was employed at military bases in Arkansas and Texas, returning to Davenport in 1946. Jean was then employed in the claim department of Kemper Insurance, where she remained for 40 years, retiring in 1987.

Jean was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Electa Circle of Kings Daughters, Danish Sisterhood Lodge 3, Putnam Museum Guild and Plus 60 Club. She was also a charter and life member of Benevolent Patriotic Order of DOES. Jean’s hobbies included reading, collecting antique figurines, photography and making scrapbooks for her many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Jeanette Cox, Eleanor Petersen, Thelma Allen and Norma Scherff; her brothers, Charles Colbert and Donald D. Colbert; and her nephew, Norman Petersen. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marlene Colbert, Davenport; nieces, Linda (Gary) Diedrick, Galena, Ill., Janet (Ron) Shewman, Racine, Wis., Carole Sellers, Davenport, Sharon (Tom) Miller, East Moline, and Patti Symmonds, Muscatine; nephews, Richard (Linda) Cox, Winter Garden, Fla., Robert (Donna) Petersen, Maysville, Michael (Denise) Allen, Sikeston, Mo., Craig (Lynn) Allen, Bettendorf, Raymond Colbert and Donald G. Colbert, Davenport.
