James was the son of Seaborn C and Mary Elizabeth Miles Coker. He was born about 1828 in Alabama and left this world sometime in 1854 in Conway County, Arkansas.
He married Sarah E. Moseley on January 23, 1852 in Washington County, Alabama.
Shortly after the marriage James, his new wife Sarah, and their extended families moved to Conway County, Arkansas. They arrived before the birth of his son James Jr. on December 13, 1852. About 1854 his daughter Mary was born.

Sometime in 1854 James passed away and a custody battle between his widow and parents. His parents won and maintained custody of the two children.

There are court papers in the Conway County, Arkansas court house that after the death of James, his father Seaborn went to court to maintain custody of his two grandchildren James Jr and Mary.
At one time there was a hearing for the return of Mary from Martin and Jerusha Crane who were her maternal grandparents.

His widow Sarah remarried sometime between 1854-1860 to a man named Thomas McBurnitt, he was at least 30 years her senior.

I have found no futher information on Sarah after the 1860 census. I do not know if she passed away or remarried again.
