Mary Hicks Messick Coffey was the daughter of Henry and Hannah Nicholson Hicks of Caldwell Co. She married twice. On June 8, 1865 she married Finley G. Messick, who had briefly served with the 58th NC Reg before deserting in November 1863. The couple had three children: Henry Hicks (b. 1865), George Henry (b. 1868), and David Dugan Finley (b. 1870). On April 2, 1874 Mary married Bartlett Coffey (1842-1912), also a veteran of the 58th NC Reg, whose family were settled in the upper Yadkin Valley, known as Happy Valley, for a hundred years. Mary and Bartlett worked a farm in the Buffalo area of the valley and added three more children to the family: Thomas Franklin (b. 1877), Bynum Nelson (b. 1878), and Ada (b. 1880).
