Elaine Childs, 60, died Dec. 14, 1995, at Providence Extended Care Center. Services were at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown. Graveside services were in the spring in Fairbanks.
Mrs. Childs was born Ramona Elaine Coffer on Dec. 13, 1935, in Pontiac, Mich., to Leslie ''Pete'' and Vivian Coffer. In 1948, she moved with her family to Oregon. In 1953, she married James Childs. They and their four young sons spent their early years on Oregon's McKenzie River. In 1968, they moved to Alaska. They raised their boys in Delta Junction. In 1975, Mrs. Childs joined her husband in their fledgling business on the North Slope. She began making Prudhoe Bay home, as her husband and sons prospered providing rental equipment and mechanical needs to companies. Soon, Prudhoe Bay General Store was opened, followed by Sagriver Hardware and Childs' Travel. In 1977, she became postmistress and moved the post office over to complete Childs' Camp. Next, she focused energies on community needs. She began a successful drive to make Prudhoe Bay its own voting precinct, her family said, and began a strong push to register voters so their voices would be heard. She also strived to bring religious services to the camp whenever possible. Mrs. Childs served on the board of directors of the Arctic Slope Telephone Association Cooperative for eight years. For many people who made Prudhoe Bay a part of their lives in the '70s and '80s, it would have been a much different place without Mrs. Childs, according to her family. ''Her vision, her heart, and her sense of humor made a hostile environment a home for many. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and worked with her. Alaska lost one of its finest,'' the family said.
She leaves her husband and partner, Jim of Anchorage, son, Steve of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Geri of Fairbanks; daughter-in-law, Diana of Fairbanks; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; mother, Vivian Coffer of Oregon; and many other relatives and friends.
