Charles Wendell Coffee passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at a care center in Dallas.

Wendell was born March 10, 1925, in Loraine, Mitchell County, to the late Charlie and Wilson Hurd Coffee.

He started school at Lynn in Lynn County in 1931. He did not have a complete report card from a single school for an entire year until 1938 at T-Bar in Lynn County. He graduated from Tahoka High School in 1942. He enrolled at Texas Technological College in 1942, from which he joined the Navy. He served as a radio technician petty officer aboard the USS Boston (CA-69) maintaining and repairing radio, radar and Loran equipment. He was aboard the Boston in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the armistice documents ending the war in 1945.

After serving our country, Wendell graduated from Texas Tech University, with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1947 and from the University of Texas, with a law degree in 1954. Wendell worked as an examiner in the U.S. Patent Office and did patent work at Diamond Ordnance Fuze Laboratory in Washington, D.C. In 1956, he returned to Lubbock where he practiced patent law until 2004. During this time he obtained about 600 patents for his clients.

For many years Wendell enjoyed sailing and racing small sailboats throughout West Texas. On April 9, 1983, he married La Una Butler. They enjoyed traveling in Europe and much of the United States. Wendell was a lifelong Methodist, having joined in his childhood.

Along with his parents, Wendell was preceded by his brother, Wayne Coffee, who was killed in Germany in 1944, and a daughter, Camille Coffee, in 2008.

Survivors: Wife, La Una Coffee of Dallas; a daughter and her husband of Lubbock; 2 sons and their wifes; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; stepchildren, Paul of Wimberly and David and wife, Debbie, and Mary Alice, all of Dallas.
