Mrs. E. W. Cocke, died Friday, December 13, 1935 at the Cocke home at South Platte, CO, where the family has resided for the past few years. Her death resulted from a pneumonia attack, and came as a shock to her many friends in Collingsworth County.

Mrs. Gussie Sherwood Cocke was born at Pilot Point, in Denton County, Texas, November 22, 1885, and at the time of her death was 50 years and 21 days of age.

Mrs. Cocke came to this county in 1899 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Sherwood and family. The family first resided on a ranch in the Salt Fort Community, and Mrs. Cocke remained there until her marriage with E. W. Cocke, son of R. H. Cocke, another county pioneer, on October 3, 1906.

In 1902, Mrs. Cocke joined the Methodist Church and since that time has taken an active part in church and Sunday School work. In additon to the numerous other duties demanded of a pioneer wife and mother Mrs. Cocke always found time to assist her neighbors and friends in time of distress and need. She became widely known, evan as a young woman, for her wonderful personality and unusual accomplishments.

Amond some of Mrs. Cock's dearest friends were those with whom she was closely associated in the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Cocke was one of the first members to join the Eastern Star chaper here following its organization. She became a member of the organization in 1906, and since that time has worked long and faithfully in the order. She was a sister upon whom no one hesitated to call in time of need. The organization honored her during the 20 years of membership with every office in the local chapter climaxing the honors with the position of Worthy Matron.

Mrs. Cocke was also an active worker for the welfare and promotion of the schools. She was active in the Parent-Teacher Association and in 1931 was class mother of the senior class of the Wellington High School.

A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Cocke's home was a place that everyone loved to visit. Her home offered music and art, a prevailing sense of love and good fellowship-with a guiding hand that saw all needs were attended.

Surviving relatives are: her husband, E. W. Cocke, three sons, Sam Dick Cocke, Edmund Cocke, and Billy Joe Cocke; one daughter, Dorothy Margaret Cocke, all of South Platte, CO; her mother, Mrs. Sarah Sherwood of Wellington; a sister, Mrs. Seth Horn of Pampa; three brothers, R. R. Sherwood of Amarillo; Hugh Sherwood of San Antonio; H. E. Sherwood of Wellington.
