Erasmus, a farmer, enlisted as a Private in Second Compan (Capt. L. F. Jones' Company), Richmond Howitzers Light Artillery at Barboursville on 26 April 1864. His discharge date is unknown.

He married Margaret Ann ("Maggie") Parrett in Richmond on 1 October 1871. They had at least four children: Laurender, Carrie, John Dillard, and Grover Cleveland.

He died at his home at 117 East Canal Street. His grave in his father's plot, near two siblings, is unmarked.
