Our beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend Aartje Elisabeth Johanna Vanderhooft Clyde, 66, passed away October 9, 2006, due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis. Aty was born in Nijmegen, Netherlands January 22, 1940, to Peter and Elisabeth Vanderhooft. After surviving World War II, she immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, with her family in 1948. She graduated from Jordan High School and from the University of Utah. She majored in Secondary Education with emphases in speech, theater arts, and the biological sciences. While attending the University of Utah, Aty met her sweetheart and true love, H. Leon Clyde. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on December 16, 1960. Aty taught at Bingham H.S., Skyline H.S., and Centerville Jr. High, where she served as head of the English Department. She loved teaching and was especially gifted with teenagers. Over the years, six wonderful children joined their family and Aty became a full-time mother to love and teach them. They raised their children in Utah, California and Illinois. While in Illinois, Aty was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and given 3 years to live. In her typical Dutch fashion, she stubbornly stretched those 3 years into 25 years. Following Leons retirement, they returned to their beloved Utah to be near family. Aty was a gifted speaker and loved people. She could carry on conversations with total strangers in the grocery store. She especially enjoyed a good debate. She will also be remembered for her love of theater, her sewing, canning, and castle cakes, and her smile. She cherished her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings in all of the auxiliaries. She was an original cast member for the -City of Joseph- Nauvoo pageant. She is survived by her loving husband and caregiver, Leon Clyde, of Springville, Utah; her six children: Ailene (Clarke) O Byrne of Albuquerque, NM; Johanna (Sheldon) Miner of Lehi, UT; Harold (Tamlynn) of Torrance, CA; Tanya (Roy) Syme of Henderson, NV; Michael (Joanne) of Westchester, IL; and Benjamin of Davenport, IA; also one brother, Jan (Louise) Vanderhooft of Salt Lake City, UT. She has 9 grandchildren. We give special thanks to Jackie Drage for her wonderful service to our Mother during the difficult last four years. A viewing will be held Sunday, October 15th from 6-8 pm at the Wheeler Mortuary in Springville, Utah. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 16th at 1:00 pm, viewing from 12-1 pm, at the LDS Church, 1965 E. Canyon Rd. Springville. Married Harold Leon Clyde on December 16, 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple. Survived by husband, H. Leon Cyde; children, Ailene (Clarke) O'Bryne, Johann (Sheldon) Miner, Harold (Tamlynn) Clyde, Tanya (Roy) Syme, Michael (Joanne) Clyde, Benjamin Clyde; nine grandchildren.
