Former Pastor Here Dies At Seatte, Washington
The Rev. J.P. Clyde, 81, Pastor of the Algona Congregational Church 1945 to 1949 died at his Seattle home Saturday, July 7, after a brief illness. Private memorial services were held at the home on July 10, followed by cremation.
Born at Waucoma Mr. Clyde was graduated from Grinnell College, later from Columbia and Yale Universities. While at the Yale Divinity School, he was an outstanding track star, ran in the first Penn relays, and for four years held the world's record for the mile. One of Mr. Clyde's prized possessions was a watch given him when he established this record, with his name and the record inscribed on the back.
Served Seattle Churches
Mr. Clyde first went to Seattle in 1922 to serve the Fairmount Congregational Church in West Seattle. Later he served the Plymouth Congregational Church there. In addition to the 61 continuous years in the ministry, Mr. Clyde taught history and philosophy at Iowa State College located in Ames; Upper Iowa University located in Fayette; and the Oregon State College.
Mr. Clyde returned to Seattle at the close of his Algona pastorate, and there supplied in various pulpits, preaching his last sermon at Magnolia Community Church just two weeks before death.
An active mountaineer, Mr. Clyde had climbed a number of the major Pacific Coast peaks. He remained young in mind and spirit, tho' he grew old in years. Mr. Clyde is survived by his wife, Mary, two daughters, Mrs. R.K. Christy, Seattle, and Mrs. P.J. Albrook, Watertown, South Dakota; three sons, William R. and A. Douglas Clyde, both of Seattle and John Paul Clyde, San Francisco and a brother, Frank Clyde, Phillipsburg, Missouri.
