Mr. Neil O. Clute, 91, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home in Jewett. Rev. Alan Van Hooser will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Sardis Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites and an escort provided by the Patriot Guard. There will be no visitation in Jewett. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague.
Neil was born in Gainsville, Missouri, to the late Fred and Roxie Clute. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to Marquez, Texas. During his teens, Neil went to work at a dry goods store in Stafford, Texas, until being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the 98th Division Infantry and saw action in Italy and North Africa. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, but liberated after only a day. After the war, Neil returned to Marquez and went into business with his brother, Herman, building concrete blocks and various construction supplies. He and Herman were also accomplished musicians and played on a radio station on occasion in Carthage, Texas. Neil married Dessie Gibson on October 29, 1947. He went to work as a clerk for the Jewett Post Office in 1954 and in 1957 he was commissioned as Postmaster by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He remained as Postmaster for Jewett until his retirement in 1980. Neil enjoyed electronics and was an avid amateur radio operator. He served as Scout Master for several years in Jewett as well. Neil was a Past Master and member of Jewett Masonic Lodge #427 for over 50 years, and a Methodist by Faith.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Wilbur Clute, Millard Clute, Wayne Clute, and Herman Clute; and sisters, Zella Miles, Hannah Allen, and Uvaughn Scarpinato.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dessie Clute, of Teague; daughter, Doris Smith and husband, Mark, of Teague; son, Dennis Clute and wife, Robin, of Burleson; grandson, Robert Smith and partner, Casey Bananzadeh, of San Jose, CA; granddaughter, Sarah Hadlock and husband, Bret; great-grandson, William, of New Braunfels; sister, Jane Robinson, of Fort Worth; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
