He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Paul Hunter and Beatrice Kennedy Cloninger.
Mr. Cloninger was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 50 years, Helen Faye Penley Cloninger; granddaughter, Hannah Faye Smith; sister, Shirley Fisher.
Mr. Cloninger was a self employed contractor having constructed many homes and businesses in the area. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Dal-las.
At Mr. Cloninger's request, there will be a service to celebrate his life and scatter his cremains alongside his wife at a later date in Swansboro.
Carothers Funeral Home, Stanley is serving the Cloninger family.
