Betty Clodfelter Black
Betty Black, 75, of Charlotte passed away peacefully on March 15, 2011 at home surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with ALS. Betty was born in Landis in Rowan County on July 19, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Oris Lee Clodfelter and Nellie Overcash Clodfelter.
A memorial service in celebration of Betty's life will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at Matthews United Methodist Church with Reverend Dawn Hand presiding. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Narthex.
Betty met the love of her life, Jim Black, while attending Lenoir-Rhyne College, and they married in 1956. Together they had two beautiful children, Deborah and Jon. Betty had a passion for working in her yard, and spending time with her family and friends at her home on Lake Norman. She loved the beach, especially annual summer trips to Litchfield Beach with her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she cherished her time with her grandchildren. Her friends were very important to her, and she honored many of them with her Easter and Christmas neighborhood luncheons, which was a tradition she treasured. She touched many hearts with her generosity to families with needs.
Survivors include her husband Dr. James Black, daughter Dr. Deborah Black-Carpenter and her husband Dr. Matthew Carpenter, and son Jon Black; grandchildren Nicole and Brennan Carpenter; sister Nita Hall; and brother Norman Clodfelter. She was predeceased by her parents and one sister, Ellen Clodfelter.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care - Charlotte Region for the kind and compassionate care during Betty's illness.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care - Charlotte Region, 1470 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
The Black family is in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104. Published in Charlotte Observer on March 17, 2011
