Services for Dorothy "Dottie" Pirkle, 83, Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Dr. Joe Warren officiating.
Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery.
She was born Aug. 18, 1927 in Denison to the late Clarence Luther and Madie Cline. Dottie Pirkle enjoyed a 44-year career of teaching bridge that crossed Dallas and East Texas while touching the lives of over 6,100 players.
She began teaching under the tutelage of Harry Weisz in Dallas in the 1960s. She taught over 30 years in Dallas in various places like Bud Creed's Valley View Studio, where she began her beloved novice games at Highland Park Methodist Church, Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the Jewish Community Center, the Dallas Women's Club, Richland Junior College, Northwood Hills Country Club and the Dallas Country Club.
In 1990, Dottie moved to East Texas, bringing her style of teaching duplicate bridge to Athens. In July of 1990, Dottie was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Contribution to the Novice Program by ACBL. On June 30, 1993, Dottie was recognized by ACBL as a Registered Bridge Teacher.
Dottie reached Silver Life Master in November of 1997. In 2004, she was awarded the Texas Star for her outstanding service to bridge from Unit 225, District 16 of the American Contract Bridge League. On July 21, 2007, the Dottle Pirkle bridge studio was opened, bearing her name, honoring her contributions to the game of bridge.
Dottie received a Lifetime Service award on Jan. 7, 2009. In January 2010, Dottie was awarded another Star for reaching the goal of 2,000 master points.
Over the years, "bridge has taken her on some incredible journeys." She toured the world as a cruise-line bridge instructor. Dottie taught on more than 12 cruises, and visited many places around the globe, such as Casablanca and Egypt.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wylie Andrew Pirkle, Jr. Jan. 14, 1992 and brother Clarence Cline, Jr.
Survivors include sons Wylie A. Pirkle, III and wife Sue Dee, LaRue, George Ronald Pirkle and wife Melody Dawn, Cedar Creek Lake, daughter Charlotte Laree Stull, Rockwall, eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Darin Stull, Michael Stull, Bill Pirkle, Richard Pirkle, Ronald Pirkle and Trey Woolston.
Visitation for family and friends will be 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
