Mary Clinard Bland

Fortson, Georgia- Mary Clinard Bland, 89, of Fortson, Georgia died on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Columbus Hospice. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Columbus, on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends starting at 1:00 p.m. with Interment following at Parkhill Cemetery.

Mrs. Bland was born in Ellenton, Florida on October 23, 1924 to Curtis Alvin Clinard and Lila Irene Payne Clinard. Her family later moved to Leesburg, Georgia, where she graduated from high school. She attended radio school in Milledgeville, Georgia, worked for the rationing board during WWII, and was employed for a brief time at the Albany Theater. Mary met her husband, John "Pete" Bland, on a blind date, married him a year later, and they raised their family in Albany, Georgia. When Mary's sons were in Boy Scouts, she was a devoted den mother. She loved to design, bake, and decorate cakes, and her sister's wedding dress was hand sewn by Mary. Her house and the homes of her children and grandchildren are adorned with her handcrafted embroidery, crocheted pieces, cross-stitch art, and quilts, skills which she taught, nurtured, and passed on to her granddaughters. She and her husband relocated in Harris County after his retirement. Although she was unable to continue her creative pursuits in her later years, she still enjoyed reading—another passion in her life.

Mary was a faithful member of St. Peter United Methodist Church and has been the recipient of the loving gestures of her Sunday School class and her pastor. Mary loved her Lord, her family, and her friends. Her lifetime of service to others was a testimony of her faith.
Other than her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 46 years, John H. Bland; two brothers, Curtis Clinard and Neil Clinard; and one sister, Nonie Robertson.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Bland (Susan) of St. Simons Island, Georgia and Charles H. Bland (Charlotte) of Fortson, Georgia; granddaughters: Wendy Anderson (Jeff), Anna Rodeheaver (Nathan), and Sarah Robertson (Matthew)—all of whom reside in Harris County; great-grandchildren: Bailey and Brady Anderson, and Leah, Abigail, and Rebekah Rodeheaver. Other survivors include her brother, James Clinard of Leesburg, Georgia and her sister Frances Rausch of Picayune, Mississippi.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Peter United Methodist Church or Columbus Hospice.
