France Clidat
Birth: Nov. 29, 1932
Nantes, France
Death: May 17, 2012
Paris, France

Pianist. Sometimes affectionately called "Madame Liszt", she was a prolific concert and recording artist who shall be remembered for interpreting the works of the legendary Hungarian grandmaster Franz Liszt. Having studied piano from early childhood she first attracted major notice at 15 by performing the Concerto on A minor of Henri Sauget in Geneva; subsequently trained by Maurice Hewitt and Lazare Levy, she took a First Prize from the Paris Conservatory in 1950 then in 1956 was awarded the Liszt Prize at the Budapest International Competition, an honour which had not been bestowed since 1937. Over the course of her career Mlle. Clidat gave roughly 2,700 recitals and during the 1960s and 1970s undertook a Liszt project for Decca that produced around 25 LPs encompassing all of the major pieces such as the Transcendental Etudes, the Sonata in B minor, and the Hungarian Rhapodies and garnered her a Grand Prix du Disque. Mlle. Clidat also recorded the entire pianistic output of Erik Satie as well as works by Frederic Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and others, was a respected writer and competition judge, traveled widely as a master class teacher, and for many years held a professorship at Paris' Ecole Normale de Musique. She received designation as Chevalier of Arts and Letters in 1976, was presented the Order of National Merit in 1987, and can be heard on the soundtrack of "Maelstrom" (2000) performing the Grieg Concerto in A minor. At her death much of her massive recorded legacy was available on CD. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
