Beatrice Viola Clevenger
Beatrice Viola Clevenger went to be with her Lord and Savior from a peaceful sleep Sunday, October 19, 2008. She was 87 years old.

Bea, as she was known, was born in Crosby, Minnesota, in 1921, the oldest of three children of Harry and Lillian Wolford. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Raymond, Washington, where she married Lawrence Benjamin in 1937. She gave birth to four sons, divorced and remarried Elias Clevenger in 1944, and gave birth to a daughter and two more sons before relocating to Humboldt County, California, in 1956. Elias worked in the lumber industry, and together they raised their family with love and caring. In 1966, they became foster parents for Humboldt County, California, Social Services and "Mama" Bea became well known throughout the region for accepting any child requiring assistance without question. During her nearly 20 years as a foster parent, she sheltered more than 400 children, from infants to teens, and provided them with a warm, loving environment. She was loved and appreciated by her fellow social workers and was honored as the Foster Parent of the Year by the county for providing a safe haven at any time of the day or night for abused and neglected children taken from distressing situations. In addition to being foster parents, as well as parents of seven, she and Elias adopted and raised five of the children from troubled homes who came to live with them.

Bea relocated to the Central Coast of California with her daughter in 2007 and was loved and cared for by the staff at a care home in Paso Robles, then at Danish Care Center in Atascadero. She was preceded in death by Elias, her loving husband of nearly 50 years; her son Warren; parents Harry and Lillian Wolford; brother Harry Jr.; and sister Betty. She is survived by sons (and daughters-in-law): Wayne, Larry (Roxie), Gerald (Pi), Lewis (Kathy), Jeffrey (Cynthia), Christopher, Sean, and Aaron; her daughters Polly Conway, Carol, and Anita; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be laid to rest with Elias at East Union Cemetery in Manteca, California, after a memorial service at Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero, California.
