Martel Cleaveland Boyles

Florida, Pensacola

Martel Cleaveland Boyles passed away peacefully at West Florida Hospital on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016. She was 83 years old.

Born on October 29, 1932, Martel and her 2 brothers were raised in Baltimore, Md. Following her education at a private high school, and making her "Debut," as many well-to-do young women did in that day, Martel earned an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught kindergarten for a short time before becoming a full time mother.

She and her husband, Hal, raised their children in Alexandria, VA where they were active members of Grace Episcopal Church. Martel was involved in many facets of the life of the church there, not the least of which was as the first female Junior Warden. She was active in the ECW, many musical stage productions, the choir and Friday Funsters.

Martel and Hal retired to Myrtle Beach, SC where they delighted in a slower pace of life. They joined The Church of the Resurrection where she participated in some activities, but mainly enjoyed the opportunity to unassumingly worship as a member. Martel and Hal would winter in Naples, enjoying the ability to move with the seasons and enjoy life beginning their Golden Years traveling the world together.

In 1992, they fully and finally retired to Pensacola to Azalea Trace. They continued to travel and explore the world. She enjoyed life as a volunteer in Traces Treasures and in stage productions, as well as many other social events.

Martel is preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Hal" W. Boyles, her parents, Rentzell and Lucille Cleaveland, and 1 brother Thomas Cleaveland. She is survived by her brother James Cleaveland, 5 children James (Anne W.), Anne Martel, Michael (Linda), Lisa Boyles Logan (Joe), and Harold Wayne Boyles, Jr. (Letty). Additionally, there are 5 grandchildren (Elizabeth Anne Boyles McCumiskey, Cayce Martel Boyles, Jason Bustle, Zachary Boyles, Ana Boyles Bradford, and Leeanne Pretty), as well as 5 great-grandchildren (Brayden, Conrad, Prescott, Sophia and Beau).

A memorial service will be held at Azalea Trace Life Care Community, Saturday, April 9th at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.

The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, April 10th at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Pensacola. Interment will immediately follow the service outside in the Memorial Gardens.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Azalea Trace, Willowbrook Nursing Center, and West Florida Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity.
