Barbara Cleaveland Carl was born in Washington, D.C. on September 6, 1930 and died at home surrounded by family on November 21, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Albert; her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Rob Renfroe, daughter, Pamela Ebling and daughter and son- in-law, Patricia Carl and Douglas Feick; grandchildren, Stephen and Ian Renfroe and Rebecca and Carl Ebling. She is also survived by sister, Maryann Bratburd and brothers, Bradford, Perry and Steven Cleaveland. Barbara was an adventurer and a homemaker. Her family life included years of residence in Venezuela, Libya, Houston, Indonesia, Russia and Fairhope, Alabama. Her hobbies included world travel, gardening, and camping. She was a gourmet cook, gracious hostess, and lover of nature. She was practical, strong and embodied a classic elegance. She taught us to value family, care for one another and always wear lipstick. She loved to laugh and saw humor in life. The family is grateful for the support of friends, neighbors, caregivers and hospice during her brief illness. Special thanks to Phil, Debbie, Christa and Lori. Barbara's life will be celebrated with private gatherings of family and friends.
