Andrew Gordon Claytor II, known as Andy to most of us and Brother Redneck to his Riders In Recovery Brothers, of 1601 Double Bridge Road, Chatham, VA, peacefully went to be with the Lord in Heaven, Wednesday, July 31, 2013 after a battle with liver failure.
Andy was born August 28, 1953 in Texarkana, Texas; raised in Charlotte, NC; and graduated from North Mecklenburg High School. He owned his own business - Handy Andy - providing contracting services.
Andy was a huge advocate for organ donation having received two organ transplants - a liver on January 18, 1995 from a gracious donor family and a kidney recently on February 1, 2012 from his sister, Tracye Gilleland. Having the transplants enabled him to travel the world; participate in US, Canadian and World Transplant Olympic Games; raise awareness about organ donation; and demonstrate to all the benefits of organ donation. Andy donated all medals won in these events to Donor Families - showing his genuine appreciation for the gift of life they had so graciously given to him and so many others. He encouraged all Transplant Olympic participants to do the same. Andy started the Carolina Liver Association to give support and encouragement to others awaiting transplants to "just hang in there".
Andy was a member of Riders In Recovery, a motorcycle club comprised of a brotherhood of men living and riding clean and sober; supporting each other in their recovery; contributing to the community and enjoying life. On July 16, Andy celebrated 27 years of sobriety.
Andy was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church in Chatham, Virginia. He was also a Mason and member of Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. & A. M.
Andy was the son of Andrew Gordon Claytor and Jean Gardner Baber, who pre-deceased him. He was married to Sandra Hipp and had three children, Aura Elizabeth Claytor, Andrew (Drew) Gordon Claytor III and William Rian Claytor, all of Charlotte, NC. He moved to Chatham, VA about ten years ago and married Mary Chamblin Nuckols Claytor and was stepfather to Lydia Ellen Nuckols Bowers and husband Bradlee Bowers of Danville, VA and Julia Grace Nuckols of the residence. Andy is also survived by his sister Tracye Claytor Gilleland and husband, Troy Gilleland (Gil) of Peachtree City, GA; his sister Teresa (Terri) Claytor Nunn and husband, Dale Nunn of Pfafftown, NC; his granddaughter Mikayla Paige Rubright; his grandson, Xander Bowers; his niece Molly Nunn and nephew Adam Nunn; his "adopted" son Nathan Tesh and his "brother" Tom Miller. Andy's "family" reaches to the far corners of the world. He was loved by so many.
