Martha was born in Kings County on October 20, 1918, and passed away peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living in Fresno surrounded by her family and friends, at the age of 93.
Martha's family came to the Riverdale area from Arkansas. They settled in the North Fork area on Everett Ave. and lived there for many years. Martha graduated from North Fork Elementary School and held dear friendships from that time. She graduated from Riverdale High School as an Honor Student and attended all of the high school's reunions, including the one held in 2010. After high school, she graduated from beauty college in Fresno. She was an active supporter of education.
In 1940, Martha Clayton married Eugene Brughelli and settled on the Brughelli Farm on Cerini and Monroe. In 1957, Martha and Gene built a new home on Valentine Ave., south of Riverdale where they raised two children, Gene, Jr. and Janice. Martha was a full partner in her husband's farming business.
In her lifetime, Martha was active in, and served in the offices of the Riverdale PTA, the Riverdale Women's Civic Club, Riverdale Boy Scout and Brownie Troops, and was a member of the Fresno Basque Club. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, and participated in the yearly church bar-b-que and celebration. Her favorite pastimes were family gatherings, shopping, fashion, and caring for her pets.
Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene Brughelli, Sr.; and brother, Vernon "Doc" Clayton. She is survived by her son, Gene Brughelli, Jr. and his wife Patricia; daughter, Janice Walters; grandchildren, Kerri Dorn and her husband, Andrew, Matthew Brughelli and his wife, Marga, Michael Brughelli, Sam Brughelli, and Tana Bass and her husband, James; great-grandchildren, Lance, Blake, Logan, and Maia; and nieces, Ann Brooks and husband, Buddy, and Donna Herbold and her husband Fred.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 3047 W. Mt. Whitney, in Riverdale on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Laton.
