US Diplomat. He served as U.S. Charge d'Affaires to Russia from 1836 to 1837; U.S. Charge d'Affaires to Peru from 1847 to 1853; and U.S. Minister to Peru from 1853 to 1860.

He was the son of US Congressman Joseph Clay and Mary Ashmead Clay.

His brother was Joseph Ashmead Clay.

He married Frances Sophia Catherine Gibbs on April 2, 1835. She died in Vienna, Austria on January 28, 1840, and is buried there.

He then married Jane Tucker McKnight Crawfurd on June 18, 1845.
He had three children with Frances Gibbs Clay:

1). Henry Gibbs Clay (December 25, 1835-November 3, 1911).

2). Mary Frances Clay (February 3, 1837-October 4, 1837).

3). Antony Alexander Clay (February 17, 1839-February 4, 1906).

He then had three children with Jane Crawfurd Clay:

4). Jane Crawford Clay (February 14, 1848-May 8, 1851). Died in childhood in Lima, Peru and interred there.
