The son of Green Berry Clay & Malinda Elizabeth Williams, he was first married to Sarah Elizabeth Bradley on April 14, 1887 in Fulton County, Georgia and they had five children together: Hugh L. (b-1889), Brice M. ( b-1894), Ruby M. (b-1897), Alton H. (b-1899) and Viola (b-1900 m-Stanford). After his wife's death in 1904, he was remarried to a widow Annie Rooks Tuggle on December 28, 1904 and they raised their combined family of eight children together. He was a carpenter.
