"The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 37, No 11, p 5, Mar. 17, 1881.

On Sabbath, March 5th, 1881, in Plainfield, N. J., H. Mandane Clarke, wife of Geo. H. Babcock, entered into the rest which remaineth for those whose life is hid with Christ in God, in the 47th year of her age. She was a daughter of Ephraim H. Clarke, deceased, and Angeline L. Clarke, of Walworth, Wis. Disease of the heart had made her a sufferer from childhood, and for some years past she had lived in constant expectation of sudden death, always carrying with her a card by which she might be identified if among strangers. The disease crept into the citadel of her life with a persistency which neither skill nor care nor love could turn aside. For some months preceding her death, she suffered greatly, often indescribably.

During her earlier life, standing so constantly in the shadow of death, she shrunk from it with something of dread. All this passed away, and she came to look upon her going as one looks upon a pleasant journey. As the end drew near, she made all preparations for it, calmly. It was a beautiful Sabbath on which she went home, and she sought to have her couch so arranged that she might enjoy the beauty from her window. A little after noontide, she fell into a gentle slumber, from which she passed quietly to her waking in the land of eternal sunshine.

Seldom has the power of a Christian faith been more fully illustrated than in her death. Naturally reserved, she made comparatively few acquaintances, and had few intimate friends. Those who knew her best bear strong testimony to her purity of soul, and her unselfish regard for the comfort and happiness of those around her. She united with the Seventh-day Baptist Church of Plainfield by baptism March 10th, 1858, and remained a worthy member until called to the church above. A. H. I.
