Mrs. Wernli, the former Elizabeth Clarke, died Thursday (July 27, 1989) at St. Mary's Regional Health Center at Detroit Lakes.

A service was held at 11 a.m. today (Monday) at the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes with Pastor Martin Stromm of the First Congregational Church at Pelican Rapids officiating.

She was born Feb. 3, 1906, in Le Mars. She moved with her parents to Kinbrae and Montevideo, Minn., where she attended school through the sixth grade. They moved back to Le Mars, where she graduated from high school in 1924. She taught the Langendorfer Country School in 1924-1925. She enrolled at Western Union College where she received her music teaching certificate in 1928. She taught all grades of music, including chorus and band for two years at Sloan Consolidated Schools for $80 a month.

She started playing organ at the Presbyterian Church in Le Mars as a sophomore in high school and continued in that capacity until her graduation from college.

She married Kenneth J. Wernli June 14, 1930, in Le Mars. After their marriage the couple lived at Sioux City from 1930 to 1947. During that time she substituted in music departments at the junior and senior high school level and also substituted on organ at the First Unitarian Church for several years in the 1940's. She was organist for the Eastern Star Isis Chapter for a year.

In the fall 1947, the family moved to Hudson, Ohio, and she became Congregational Church organist where she served until September 1948, but her career was terminated due to illness. During her active church years at Hudson, she organized and directed three youth choirs and became Hudson's first welcome wagon hostess. She taught 10 young people in piano lessons weekly for several years. She was accompanist for vocal soloists and violinists at concerts.

The couple lived for several years at Pittsburgh, moving in March 1972, to their present home, at 520 Shorewood Drive, Detroit Lake, Minn.

She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star; a charger member of the P.E.O., chapter B.K., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and she was a member of the Congregational Chruch at Detroit Lakes.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of Detroit Lakes; a son, Robert Allen Wernli, Hudson, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. John (Beverly) Bahl, Mechanicsburg, Pa., and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.
