Funeral services for Garner M. Clark, 71, of Portales, will be 2 P.M., Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. J.R. "Dick" Ross officiating. Christopher Hoff, Michael Hoff, Garner Clark III, Joshua Hoff, K.C. Fitzwater, Teddy Clark, Trent Clark, J.R. Fitzwater, Weston Clark, P.J. Fitzwater, Foster Clark, Jerald Ray Clark and Aaron David Gaddy will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Weldon Jones, Buster Tucker and Mike Tucker, as well as all of his other many friends. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery.
Garner was born March 31, 1935, in Boyd, Texas, to the home of Lottie May and Willie G. Clark and died late Sunday evening, Feb. 11, 2007, in Portales. His family moved to Alamogordo when he was a small child. He graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1953 and went on to study at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces for one year and then at Baylor University for a year.
In 1955 he was married to Barbara Irene Goff. The couple had four children. In the mid 1950's he began his career as an electrician working for the Corps of Engineers. During the construction of the missile silos surrounding Roswell and Walker Air Force Base he made his home in Roswell and worked on the wiring at several of those sites.
Later he accepted a position with Charles Nelson Electric in Lubbock. While in their employment he was sent to work sites across the southwest. In 1962 they sent him to Lawton, Okla., where he worked at Cameron University wiring various buildings until 1969.
On Nov. 8, 1992, in San Angelo, Texas, he was married to Olene Foster. He moved to Portales to make his home with her. Until 2000 he was employed by Chaparral Electric. In addition, he helped his wife in the operation of her business, Joe's Flowers.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Garner was a devoted family man. He enjoyed taking his children fishing and doing family activities and going bowling with his wife.
He is survived by his wife, Olene, of Portales; six sons and four daughters-in-law, Garner (Robin Ruiz) Clark Jr., of Roswell, Teddy (Deborah) Clark, of West, Texas, Cary G. (Davee) Clark, of Fort Worth, Texas and Jerald Ray (Brooke) Foster, K.C. Fitzwater and J. R. Fitzwater, all of Portales; three daughters, Rhonda (Chris) Hoff, of Hewitt, Texas, Rebecca Ann (Shawn) Chandler, of Clovis and Beverly K. Morris, of Clovis; 19 grandsons; and one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Dellon Ray Clark of Austin, Texas; three sisters, Marjorie Holmes of Pearl, Miss., Lottie Dell Bush, of Arlington, Texas and Polly Clark Housewright, of Harwood, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe, Truett and Norris Clark; and a sister, Dorothy Clark.
