J. O. CLARK, 78, OF NEWTONIA PASSES AWAY WAS NATIVE OF NEWTON COUNTY AND LIVED AT NEWTONIA PRACTICALLY ALL HIS LIFE, A MERCHANT AND POSTMASTER.
John O. Clark, 78 years old, native born and widely known citizen, died Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. M. Weems, in Newtonia where he had lived for some time. He had been in failing health for a long time and for several months he was blind and helpless. His death had been expected for some time.
The body was prepared for burial by the Bigham Undertaking Co. Of Neosho and funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in Newtonia tomorrow, Friday, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Chas. Siler. Interment to be made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery at Newtonia.
John Oliver Clark was born in Van Buren township, Newton county, Jan. 10, 1861, the son of Frederick Oliver Clark, who came from Tennessee. The family located in Newtonia in 1865 and the father was engaged in blacksmithing and wagon making until his death in 1881. John O. carried on the business for some time after his father's death and then engaged in the mercantile business in Newtonia. He was engaged in the drug business with Dr. W. L. Hancock whose daughter he married, and later with Dr. G. W. Harrison.
He was engaged in the general mercantile business for more than 40 years and carried one of the largest stocks in the county. He was postmaster there for 24 years. Some few years ago he sold a part interest in the store to Carol Gum and when his health failed he turned the business over to his young partner. He was a successful business man and very highly regard in a wide community where he had made his home.
Mr. Clark's wife died 12 years ago. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. B. M. Weems, at whose home he died, Mrs. Bruce B. Ritchey of Paola, Kan., Mrs. R. S. Landrum of Enid, Okla., and Mrs. V. G. Green of Carthage.
