Birth: Dec. 23, 1916
Death: Jan. 24, 2006

NORFOLK - Bernice Lee Clark, 89, of John Knox Towers, went to be with the Lord Jan. 24, 2006. She was a native of Washington, N.C., but had lived in Norfolk most of her adult live.

In her earlier years before she became a homemaker, Mrs. Clark was a beautician. She was a lifelong member of Park Place Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Clark and three brothers.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda L. Byers of Virginia Beach; one son, Charles R. Clark of Norfolk; two sisters, Ruth Paschal of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Lena M. Buchanon of King George, Va.; and one brother, Robert D. Buck and his wife Dorothy Buck of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by a loving nephew, William C. Duke of King George, Va.; a special grandson, Donald A. Byers of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Christine Soderberg and husband Kyle and Laura Barnes and husband Glenn; and three great-grandchildren, Sydney, Kylie and Lauren.

The message she would leave to inspire all women and men who are affected by breast cancer is, "Keep your faith, believe in the power of prayer, gather your family and friends around you for support, don't be afraid to ask for help if you think you need it. Don't ever give up hope, and ‘do whatever it takes.'" And that is what she did.

A funeral will be held at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville chapel, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 at 2 p.m. Friday by Dr. Terry Spencer, with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to Park Place Baptist Church, 430 West 31st St., Norfolk, VA 23908.

The family would also like to thank special friends, Rachael Bond, Cynthia Harr and Mary Lee Ellis, for all the love and support given during her courageous battle with breast cancer.
