Agnes Clachrie Roan was born in Scotland in March 1853, the 4th of 5 children of Sabina Riley & Robert Clachrie. She married Samuel Raleigh Roan in 1877 and they had 3 children, 2 of whom survived to adulthood: John & Robert.

The family immigrated to the US in 1883, settling in Westerly, RI where Samuel worked as a granite cutter.*

Agnes died in Westerly in 1936 at the age of 83 and is buried along with her husband Samuel & both sons and their families in River Bend Cemetery

* Dalbeattie (Scotland) Granite works was established in 1820 (Craignair Quarry). As the industry was dying down, many of the workers immigrated to other parts of the world in order to find work, a number immigrated to the USA to work at a sister quarry in Westerly, Rhode Island. Dalbeattie is credited with developing the technique of polishing granite stone to form a shiny surface. This technique was exported throughout the world by the skilled workers of Dalbeattie as they travelled.
