Mr. Floyd P. Churchwell January 19, 1924 - July 15, 2018

Floyd P. Churchwell, a native and lifelong resident of Leakesville, died July 15, 2018 in the Smith Manor Assisted Care Facility, Lucedale, MS.

Floyd was born January 19, 1924, upstairs in the Dr. A. Graham home on Main Street in Leakesville when it was a two story house, while rented by his parents. [In his high school years, he and his cousins, Hillery and Junior Churchwell, worked for the popular county agricultural agent, later state senator G. L. Beavers, on his farm south of Lucedale and elsewhere.]
After high school, he worked as a routing and billing clerk for the GM&O Railroad Company in Mobile until he entered the U. S. Army Air Force, May 19, 1943 at Camp Shelby, MS. After basic training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, his service included duty in Salt Lake City, Utah and at Lowry Field, Denver, CO. He kept a multi-page diary while a member of the 484th Bombardment Group, consisting of over 500 personnel, during a 28 day crossing the ocean on the [Liberty Ship] U.S.S. Gedon Wells from Hampton Roads, VA, to Brindisi, Italy, in 1944. He served with a B-24 Liberator Group, 15th Air Force, in [Toretto] Italy and North Africa, as a radio technician [MOS 754], servicing aircraft radios. After the end of the War, he was transferred to Marrakesh, North Africa (135 miles south of Casablanca), in support of transporting troops from the war. He returned back to the States from Casablanca [via Dakar, Africa and Brazil on the U S Army Transport Ship Frederick Lykes, docking in Miami, FL. His journey back took ten days, and he was discharged from the USAAF in Nov 1945.

After discharge, he resumed his reserved job with GM&O in Mobile, mostly commuting daily from Leakesville, until he retired. During commuting over the years, he transported a variety of area residents [including his sister Eliza] to their jobs in Mobile.

Floyd was a life long member and remained very active in the First Baptist Church of Leakesville.

In September 1955, in the Dr. Graham home, he was married to Doris Louise Graham, widow of Willie Lee Taylor, who had died unexpectedly in 1947, and the daughter of Dr. A. and Lula (Hinson) Graham of Leakesville. Floyd and Doris were very devoted and loved to travel, much of it while active in the VFW. After Doris died in March 2000 he became the companion of one of those VFW travelers, Gloria (Ballard) Harper, widow of Frank J. Harper of Yazoo City, MS, to whom he became very devoted and she to him. She died in Sep 2012 as a result of earlier injuries suffered in a fall.

If there had been a count of the number of funerals attended by a person, he would have been at the top of the list. He leaves to mourn his loss a large number of relatives and friends.

Floyd was the oldest of five children. He was preceded in death by his parents Johnnie W. and Juanita Churchwell, his siblings, Lucretia Churchwell, who died at age 8, Eliza Marie Coaker, and Glenn Churchwell. He is survived by his sister, Sharron Roberts of Hattiesburg, sister-in-law Patsy Churchwell of Hattiesburg, step-son Graham (Pam) Taylor, and step-grandchildren Johnan Hand, Hattiesburg, and Willie Lee (Kadeesa) Taylor, Leakesville, and a number of nephews and nieces.

He will be buried beside his wife, Doris, in the Graham plot of McLeod Magnolia Cemetery in Leakesville.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 18, 2018 11:00 - 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Leakesville.
