Manufacturer Dies at Home in Yakima; Funeral held Here

M. H. Church Passes Away After Long Period of Failing Health -- Pioneer and Builder of Industry

Following a long illness, M. H. Church, pioneer of Kennewick, passed away at his home in Yakima Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at 10:30 Thursday morning. Pall bearers were selected from former employees of the Church Manufacturing company.

Mr. Church was 72 years old at the time of his death. he came to Kennewick in 1906, and with H. C. Stringer organized the Twin City Ice & Cold Storage company, which he operated for several years. Meanwhile he discovered the high quality of the Kennewick grapes and carried on extensive experiments with the juice. When Stringer withdrew from the company, Church reorganized the business into Church Manufacturing company, adding the grape juice plant to his ice and storage business.

Starting with a small building on the present site, the structure was added to and remodeled until it now forms the largest concern of its kind in the West. Church's Grape Juice has a national distribution and reputation and has won world praise for the purity and high quality. On account of ill health Church sold his interest in 1927 to J. G. Kelly of Walla Walla.

He was predeased by his first wife, Lois. He is survived by his second, wife and by four daughters, Eleanor, Mrs. C. E. King of Kennewick, Mrs. Victor E. Marriott of Downers Grove, Ill. and Mrs. Hoyt of Oak Park, Ill., Mrs. Church (2nd wife: Lydia BERDERVIEDEN) brought the body from Yakima and will remain until after the funeral.
