John Smith Chronister was born in Hampton Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1838, the son of Jacob L. & Harriet (Smith) Chronister. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Latimore Township, Adams County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 10. Promoted from private to 1st lieutenant January 25, 1862, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.

He married Maria Kate Elliot in 1870 in Gettysburg and fathered Alice (b. @1868), Elmer Elliot (b. 12/22/73), Albertus (b. @1875), and Herbert Dix (b. 01/15/78). By no later than 1873, he had moved his family to Buckeye Township, Dickinson County, Kansas.
