Joan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Vincent J. Arnold of Middletown, and daughters Kathleen Gallagher of Tiverton, Ann May of Newport, and Karen Ellsworth of McDonough, NY, and sons William of Ashby, MA, James of Portsmouth, and David of Monument Beach, MA, and foster daughter Kathleen Fryer of Newport. She is survived by her sisters Helen Mead of Rochester, NY, Anne Christman of Scotia, NY, and was predeceased by her brother William of Delanson, NY. She leaves 12 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Since moving to Middletown in 1965, Joan has been active in the community. She was a daily communicant, lector and a member of a Small Christian Community at St. Lucy’s. Joan retired in 1992 after 17 years with Newport County Visiting Nurse Association. She was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters, recently State and Newport Treasurer, and had been a past Newport LWV President. She was a member of the Newport, Portsmouth and Jamestown Historical Societies, and the Museum of Newport Irish History. Joan and her husband loved to travel, visiting all 50 US states and over 40 foreign countries. She and her husband sponsored more than 30 international students from the Naval War College during the past 15 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 21, 2011 at 9am in St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Rd., Middletown RI. Private burial service at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown on Tuesday. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 20, 2011 from 3-6pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lucy Church Capital Fund Appeal.
