Esther Christiansen Waal, 104, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at her home in Columbia.
The family will hold an open house to honor Esther's memory at 2200 Yuma Drive, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 25. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond, Va. A memorial service will take place in Columbia in September.
Esther was born Feb. 10, 1906, on Washington Island, Wis., the daughter of Hattie and Carl Christiansen. She married Charles H. Waal in 1929. They lived in Milwaukee and Richmond, Va.
Esther's first job was as a dental assistant in Chicago, starting at age 15. Later, she had a career in business, including positions with the Norris Foundation in Milwaukee and Life Cos. in Richmond. She moved to Columbia in 1975 and earned an Associate of Arts degree at Columbia College in 1977.
A talented musician, Esther began playing the piano at the age of 6 and continued through May of this year.
Esther was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church and the Kate Thompson Circle of King's Daughters.
Survivors include a daughter, Carla Waal Johns and husband William of Columbia; three step-grandchildren, Susan Graber, David Johns and Amy Johns and their families; four nieces, Karen Iseminger, Christina Weymann, Sarah Bandiera, and Lorna Muzevich; two nephews, Peter Waal and Alan Waal; and dear friends, the Dickinson-Eaton family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her sisters Frances Borman, Alma Sjolin and Charlotte Maines, and her brother, Harvey Christiansen.
