The Rev. Christian Ceplecha, 74, monk of St. Procopius Abbey and longtime history professor at Benedictine University in Lisle, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. William Ceplecha was born July 14, 1927, in Berwyn.
After his elementary education at schools in Berwyn and Cicero, the family moved to Westmont. He attended Downers Grove High School and graduated in 1945. He then entered St. Procopius College in Lisle.
A year later, he applied to join the monastic community. Following his novitiate, he took vows under the name Christian on July 16, 1947. Continuing his studies at St. Procopius College and Seminary, he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1949 and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Martin McNamara on May 30, 1953, at St. Raymond Nonnatus Cathedral in Joliet.
He was then sent to study modern European history at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., from which he earned a master's degree in 1954 and a doctorate in 1958. Back in Lisle, he taught history in the Benedictine schools for more than three decades.
Over the decades, he provided weekend assistance at a number of neighboring parishes, most notably Holy Trinity in Westmont, from 1970 to 1982; Mary Queen of Heaven in Elmhurst from 1983 to 1989; and SS Peter and Paul in Naperville from 1989 until his death.
Reception of the body and the vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at St. Procopius Abbey, 5601 College Road, Lisle.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3.
Interment will take place at St. Procopius Abbey Cemetery.
