Sandy resident Mary "Phyllis" Calhoon died Saturday, Oct. 6. She was 97.
A private service will be held in San Diego.
She was born Mary Phyllis Christensen on Oct. 11, 1914, in Gresham to Frank and Grace (Wolf) Christensen.
When Phyllis was a young child, her family moved to Sandy, where they made their permanent home and Phyllis attended school.
After graduating from Sandy High School in 1933, she attended San Diego State University, where she met her future husband.
In 1936, Phyllis married Leo Calhoon. They made their home in San Diego, and Phyllis began her career in the banking industry.
They later moved to Oregon and made their home in Sandy on Music Camp Road. Phyllis pursued her career with Clackamas County Bank. Â
In 1954, they returned to San Diego until retiring. From 1968 until 1976, Phyllis cared for her mother until she died.
After her husband's death in 1996, Phyllis returned to Oregon, living in Gresham and later returning to Sandy. For the last 11 years, Phyllis lived at Avamere in Sandy.
Every day, she would go from room to room at Avamere, where she checked up on the residents. Phyllis was a devout Christian and a member of the Nazarene Church. She enjoyed cooking and was dedicated to her family.
Survivors include five nephews and four nieces. Â
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Hood Hospice, 39641 Scenic St., Sandy, 97055.
Sandy Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
