Ralph J. "Butch" Choate, 63, of Hennessey died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at St. Mary's Regional Hospital in Enid.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Mickey Moery officiating. Burial will follow at the Hennessey Cemetery under direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home in Hennessey.
Ralph was born May 18, 1947, in Enid to Jack H. and Jule J. Judson Choate.
He graduated from Hennessey High School and spent one year at the University of Oklahoma before being drafted into the Marine Corps in the spring of 1966. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California for basic training, then spent 13 months serving in Vietnam.
Upon his return, he met and married Jan Yack in Newport Beach, California, on Aug. 16, 1969.
The couple lived in California for one year while Ralph completed his service in the U.S. Marines. He then returned to Hennessey and enrolled at Phillips University where he earned his degree in May 1973. Ralph owned and operated Choate Ford for 14 years and worked with his father in the oil and gas industry. He has owned and operated Turkey Creek Golf Course in Hennessey since 1995.
He was very active in his community. He served on the Hennessey Town Board of Trustees for a number of years and was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1980. After serving one term in the House he was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate where he served for eight years. He also served six years on the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission and was on the Pioneer Telephone Board of Trustees for 17 years. Ralph was a member of the First Christian Church of Hennessey.
He is survived by his wife, Jan of the home; one son, Judson Choate and wife Andrea; two granddaughters, Mackenzie and Emery Choate, all of Hennessey; two nephews, Jack H. Choate, III of Hennessey and Phillip Babe Choate of Kingfisher; one niece, Denise Ayree Ruhl of Cashion, and several great nieces and nephews.
His parents, Jack H. and Jule J. Choate, and one brother, Jack H. Choate, Jr., preceded Ralph in death.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his name through the funeral home to the charity of the donors choice.
