A. Bill Childers, Jr, 75, of Bryan, passed away on July 21, 2011, at the College Station Medical Center surrounded by his loving family and friends. Bill's family will receive guests during a visitation on Sunday, July 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 25, at First Baptist Church in Bryan, officiated by Dr. David Higgs. A graveside service, officiated by Dr. Travis Burleson, will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday at Mart cemetery.
Asa Bill was born in Mart, Texas, to the late Asa Bill Sr. and Kathryn Childers. He attended public schools in Mart and graduated high school to begin his college career at Texas A&M. Bill was in the Corps and served in the U.S. Army Reserves while attending A&M. He became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1960. Dr. Bill Childers married Barbara Ruth Canfield on June 27, 1959 in San Antonio, Texas. He moved his family back to Bryan in 1967 where he served for 37 years as a professor of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M. Dr. Childers was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, The Council of Athletic Ambassadors, Past President of the Business Men's Bible Class and a deacon at First Baptist Church, Bryan. He was also a former Board Chairman of the Baptist Student Ministry.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harry Burleson.
Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; son, Randy Childers and wife, Carla; daughters, Kathy Wallace, and Carol Bardin and husband, Russ; twelve grandchildren; brother, John Childers and wife, Lynda; sister, Marion Childs and husband, Danny; sister-in-law, Betty Ann Penick and husband, Tinsley; ten nieces and nephews, and other family members, including Nancy Kaderka, faithful and loving caregiver.
