Louise Elizabeth (Payne) Chew passed away unexpectedly after a heart attack in her home in Portsmouth NH on Nov. 2, 2003, at age 78. Louise was born in Boston on Oct. 27, 1925. She was the dearly loved mother of George William Chew, Jr., Philip John Chew, Elizabeth Louise Chew (Levesque), and Charles Christopher Chew.

She attended school in Harwich MA, Halifax MA, and Whitman High School, where she graduated with honors. She worked a year and then attended Bridgewater State College, where she was vice president of her graduating class (1948), president of her dormitory, Tillinghast Hall, her senior year. While there she was initiated into the Epsilon Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary educational society. After graduating from Bridgewater she earned her master's degree from Teachers' College at Columbia University. She taught in the Boston Public School system until her marriage to George William Chew on Aug. 13, 1960. They had four children, which she honored by naming them after British royalty.

In June of 1964 she moved to Portsmouth to be closer to Pease Air Force Base, where her husband was stationed. During her pregnancy with Charles, her husband abandoned the family and went off to New York and New Jersey, leaving her with the awesome task of single-handedly raising four children in a city where she knew no one. She joined St. John's Episcopal Church, where she met wonderful people like the Gettlemans, Donald Brown, and many others.

She was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, volunteer worker for Seacoast Red Cross, Strawberry Banke, and Brentwood Nursing Home. Known in town as the bicycle lady, she loved peddling around the city of Portsmouth and making friends everywhere she went.

She involved herself in volunteer work over the years: Strawberry Banke, Red Cross bloodmobiles, mostly at Middle Street Baptist Church and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and many other sites. She enjoyed playing Bingo and purchasing lottery tickets for fun. She was a member of AARP and RSVP. The past few years she volunteered her services at Brentwood Nursing Home, where she made wonderful friends, Paul Hodgdon for one.

Survivors include her son George and wife Jennifer and their children George William Chew III, Christopher Lee Chew, and Jazmine Jennifer Chew, all of Texas; daughter Elizabeth and her daughters Anastasia Elizabeth Levesque and Candace Ellen Levesque; Charles married Sheila, and they had one son, Jarod Christopher Chew.

The family sends a special thank you to John Monroe for the love and friendship he shared with their mother and the joy he brought into her life in recent years. She cared for him dearly.
