US Army Corporal Austin Ray Chenoweth was killed January 15, 1969, between the hours of 7:00 and 7:30 am while serving in Vietnam. He was serving with the 173 Air BN AITT CO A 1st. 50th. "M" Inft. Div.

He was born Febuary 19, 1947 in Noble County, Perry OK. Ray attended his first three years of schooling in Guymon OK, and Elkhart KS. He moved with his parents to Dove Creek CO in 1957 where he attended Dove Creek Elementary school and was a 1967 graduate of DCHS.

He entered the Army June 26, 1968 and took his basic training at Fort Ord CA. He was home on leave in November, leaving November 18 and arriving in Vietnam on the 22nd.
His body was accompanied to Perry OK by Sgt.David F.Fair of Fort Sill,OK. Funeral services were January 26, at 2:00 pm at the Newton Funeral Home, with Rev. Clifton McKoy, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Internment was in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Perry. Grave side services were provided by firing squad Pfc. Darrell McKenzie, Pfc. Delbert Henderson, Sp/4 Theron L.Sharp, Pfc. Nickie J. McDonald, Pfc. Michael E.Smith and Pfc. Clarence Hunter.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents, Mr. and Mrs.Star Chenoweth Sr. of Dove Creek CO.; five sisters, Starletta Saunders of Hutchinson KS; Gayle Stotler of Iola KS.; Maralee Mitchel of Hooker OK.; Norleta Watkins of San Diego CA.; Ila Rockwell of Cortez CO. and one brother, Star Chenoweth Jr. of Telluride CO. Also, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Joe Austa Shelton of Covington OK, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, friends and his fiance, Miss Enid (DD) Cox of Mancos CO.
