The Mass of Christian Burial for Isabel G. Chavez, 73, a long-time resident of Las Vegas , N.M., who passed away on Tuesday, was celebrated this morning at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Father C. John Brasher celebrated the Mass.
The interment followed in the San Jose Cemetery with the following relatives serving as casket bearers: Liza Chavez, Elizabeth Ulibarri, Ofelia Garduņo, Donna Nieto, Diane Salazar, Gloria Gallegos, Rita La Point, Judi Gallegos, Hazel Fraire, and Geraldine Garduņo.
A rosary was recited by Carla O'Neil on Thursday evening at the church.
Eulogies were delivered by Peter Garduņo and Esther Garduņo Montoya.
Isabel was born on Aug. 26, 1934, to Geronimo Garduņo and Antonia Garcia. Her maternal grandparents are the late Higinio Garcia and Valeria Montaņo; paternal grandparents, Pedro Garduņo and Adela Lucero.
She was preceded in death by her father, Geronimo in 1991, her mother Antonia in 2003, her beloved brothers Jerry Garduņo in 1986 and Pete Garduņo in 1996.
She was also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Marilla Dominguez Garduņo and Beatriz Martinez Garduņo, and her mother and father-in-law, Manuel Chavez Sr., and Eloisa Garza Chavez, a brother, Juan Bautista Garduņo, and sisters Edwina C. Garduņo.
She is survived by her husband, Jose Manuel Chavez, Jr. of Las Vegas, N.M.; one son, Orlando Chavez of Las Vegas, N.M.; a daughter, Mary Lou Lujan of Las Vegas, N.M.; and a grandson raised as a son, Joseph Chavez of Las Vegas, N.M.; brothers and sisters and their families: Ray Garduņo and Andrea, Helen and Carlos Montoya, Alice Gallegos and Donald, Viola Garduņo, Antonio Garduņo, Daniel Garduņo and Antonia, Edwina Gallegos, Gilbert Garduņo, Joe Garduņo, Rose Ann Trujillo, and Rose Mary Garduņo all of Las Vegas, N.M., Della Gonzales and Rosalio of Arlington, Texas, Lorraine Hernandez and Fred of Pueblo, Colo., and Leo Garduņo and Patricia of Los Lunas, N.M..
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lisa Chavez, Christina Chavez, William and Krystle Lujan, Brandy and Rosa Benavidez; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, Christobal Chavez of Estancia, Adelina Chavez, Carmen Gomez, Gilbert Chavez, and Aggie Ortiz all of Las Vegas, N.M., and Elma Garduņo of Thornton, Colo.
She was the second born in a family of 19.
She received her education in Las Vegas and was a waitress at the Hillcrest Restaurant for over 35 years.
