A Life Sketch Of Jefferson J. Chase, a Soldier of the Civil War – Funeral Services Conducted from Mason, Monday Last

Jefferson J. Chase was born near Bath, New York on the twenty-sixth of March, 1840 and passed away near Welton at the home of his daughter on Saturday, January 2, 1915, having reached the age of seventy-four years, nine months and six days.

He was a soldier of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1864, and having served under General Meade. He witnessed the surrender of General Lee.

Mr. Chase was married to Lovina R. Chase at Groton, New York on the thirteenth of June, 1866. To this union six sons and two daughters were born. Mrs. Chase and two sons preceded him, the wife dying in July of 1910. Andrew was called home in October of 1878; Governor, April 14, 1892.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Chase moved to a farm near Bath. Two years later they went to Zanesville, Ohio, where they entered the mercantile business. In 1873, thinking that the west offered greater opportunities, they moved to Richmond, Indiana, where they engaged in business.

In 1886, Mr. Chase and family moved to a farm two miles north of Mason, which was even after called home, although they lived at Altamont for one year and in Effingham two.

Mr. Chase was an ardent member from early manhood of the Mason, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and the Grand Army of the Republic. He was a good husband, a kind father and a true neighbor. The surviving children are: S. W. Chase of Altamont; Harry O. Chase of Richmond, Indiana; Homer B. Chase of Cherbonneau, North Dakota; Claudius H. Chase of Kankakee; Mrs. Ettie Stout of Richmond, Indiana; Mrs. Luna Spragg of Welton, at whose home he resided during the last two years of his life. Eight grand children; two great grandchildren, one brother and one sister also survive.

Following funeral services from the Methodist Church at Mason on Monday last, conducted by Rev. J. E. Burk and the Masonic Fraternity, burial took place at the Brockett Cemetery, north of Mason. A large crowd was in attendance.
