Attorney, Judge, and Native American civil rights advocate, Hiram Chase, of the Omaha tribe, served as County Judge and County Attorney of Thurston County in the 1890's. He spent decades making the case that the U.S. government had repeatedly broken its promises to the Omaha people, particularly with respect to land rights. He was among the co-founders of the Society of American Indians, the nation's first Native American civil rights organization. An 1889 graduate of the Cincinnati Law School (now the University of Cincinnati School of Law) Judge Chase made several appearances before the U.S. Supreme Court, both as counsel and as plaintiff. He had his detractors within the Omaha community who felt that he too often took whichever side benefited him personally in white-tribal disputes. He died at Chadron while visiting his daughter. Preceeded in death by his wife of 33 years, he was survived by seven children. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Pender.
