STARKE-Earnest "Ernie" Charlton, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, in Arab, Ala. He was a resident of Starke who was staying with his daughter, Diana Charlton, in Arab during his illness.
Mr. Charlton was a prior resident of Chillicothe, Ill., who was born in Hinton, W.Va., on Dec. 27, 1927, to Earnest Clay and Estel V. Charlton. He married Janice L. Swords of Guntersville, Ala., in 1955.
Mr. Charlton was a retired tool designer for Caterpillar Inc., in Mossville, Ill. He served with the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1940s, including a tour of duty in the Phillipines. He was stationed at Roswell, N.M., in 1947 during the controversial "Roswell Incident."
He loved nature, gardening and tinkering with anything broken that he could fix. His constant companion, his dog Lady, will miss their walks and squirrel hunting.
Mr. Charlton is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Janice Swords Charlton; his son, Dion Charlton of Chillicothe, Ill.; daughters, Diana Charlton of Arab, Ala., and Ellen Noonan of Jacksonville Beach; a sister, Ruby Hazivasilis of Brooksville; one grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothy Toungett and Edna Marie Johnson.
Cremation rights were accorded. A memorial service was held Jan. 27 at Guntersville Memorial Chapel in Guntersville, Ala. Services were conducted by the Rev. James Dudley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Marshall County Inc., 408 Martling Rd., Albertville, AL 35951.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
